The instinct to see everything — Hà Nội, Hạ Long, Huế, Hội An, Nha Trang, Sài Gòn — produces a trip that is exhausting and thin, each destination visited at a pace too quick for any of them to leave a mark.
A Smarter Structure
The alternative is to select four anchor points and allow two to three nights at each, supplemented by a day trip or overnight extension to a nearby highlight. Hà Nội and a Hạ Long Bay cruise as the north anchor; Huế and Hội An as the central pair (connected by the Hải Vân Pass, one of Vietnam’s great drives); Hội An to Sài Gòn by direct flight for the south. Booking accommodation first — particularly the small boutique properties and river cruises that fill a year ahead — and building transport around those fixed points produces a more satisfying itinerary than the reverse. Flexibility is a luxury best deployed in the evenings, when unplanned conversations at a street-food stall yield experiences that no itinerary could anticipate.
