Wellness & Relaxation

Africa in Style: From Cape Town to the Wild Heart of the Continent

The rice fields that surround Hội An’s old town on its northern and western edges offer a setting for morning yoga practice that is difficult to improve upon: flat paddies stretching to a horizon of blue mountains, the light arriving obliquely across the water between the planted rows, the sounds of agricultural life beginning at a pace that is its own meditation. Several retreats and boutique properties in the villages of Trà Quế and Thanh Hà have built their morning programmes around this landscape, offering guided practice on bamboo platforms elevated just above the rice-paddy level.

Sound Healing in an Ancient Town

Alongside the yoga offering, Hội An has developed an unexpectedly sophisticated sound healing community — practitioners working with Tibetan singing bowls, crystal bowls, and traditional Vietnamese instruments in sessions designed to produce states of focused relaxation that the practitioners describe as beneficial for sleep, concentration, and anxiety. The evidence base for these claims is contested, but the experiential quality of a well-run session in a centuries-old merchant house, with the sound of the Thu Bồn river audible through the shuttered windows, is its own justification.

A three-night wellness package in Hội An that combines morning rice-paddy yoga, afternoon cooking school (eating well is also wellness), and an evening sound bath covers a range of restorative practices in a town small enough to walk between them all. It is one of the few itineraries in Vietnam that requires no transport decisions after arrival.
