Before the international airport and the resort sprawl of the southern end, Phú Quốc’s north remained almost entirely untouched — a landscape of granite hills, pepper plantations, and fishing villages where the pace of life is governed by tide and weather rather than check-in times. A week spent here, moving between hammock and kayak and the evening market at Dương Đông, achieves something most holidays promise but seldom deliver: actual rest.
Where to Base Yourself
The cluster of boutique properties around Ông Lang Beach on the west coast offers the best balance of seclusion and connection. Sunsets here are unobstructed across the Gulf of Thailand, and the offshore reefs remain in genuinely good condition for snorkelling. A private speedboat charter to the An Thới archipelago in the south takes less than an hour and lands you on beaches that see fewer than a dozen visitors on a busy day.
The island’s fish sauce — nước mắm Phú Quốc — is the finest produced in Vietnam and available in its rawest, most pungent form only at the factories on the northern road. Buy a bottle that has never been filtered and take it home: it will change how you cook for years.
